During covid my former company made record profits 2 years in a row; nearly doubling their annual profits. I had an open position on my team and had to hire a new employee. I got to pick the candidate and HR handled their offer and compensation package. The amount of disrespect they showed in their offers made me lose a lot of good candidates and in the end the person that was hired left after a few months when we were “reorganized” and he was going to be moved and dropped from L3 support down to L1 and his salary was going to be cut in half. I wrote letters of recommendation for all my team members and I’m happy to say all of us left for greener pastures. At one point I was even told my most senior employee couldn’t earn more than me despite his years of tenure and complication of his role. I had no issue with it but it apparently was against “company policy”

    Fuck greedy companies!

I once applied somewhere and they said they couldn’t give the full wage I was asking for because then I would earn more than the people that were already working there and that is against company policy.

So they were already paying their employees below recommended wage and wanted me to do the same.

Anyway, I let them wait on me for like 10 weeks before I told them I found an other job that did pay me what I wanted.

I took a job once for slightly less than I wanted because the job was really interesting to me. The agreement I got in writing though was that after 6 months, they would bring me up to where I wanted to be.

6 months arrives and they tell me they can’t pay me more because then it would put me above people I worked alongside with that had been there longer. I was told this despite it being a signed deal, so I essentially got bait-and-switched.

I left for another job a little while after that.

That job laid me off after 6 months with a handful of other people. I woke up to a locked computer. To make matters worse, a friend that still works there told me they offered absolutely nothing for the holidays due to finances (they didn’t even send out gifts like they usually do). 🤦

Finally got back on my feet with something stable that pays really well. I even received an 8% bonus for the holidays.

If you had it signed on paper, couldn’t you have sued them easily? Like, I get that you might not want to, but it seems a really risky move by the company

I considered it but at the time it felt like more time and effort than what it was worth.

If they paid you more, they might not be able to brag about record profits. They would just be boring/pathetic, regular profits. Now do you understand why you’re being greedy and selfish?

It’s not an oversight, it’s intentional. They want you to know they don’t fucking care about workers. It’s about putting common people in their place and keeping them there.
