    Looks awesome. One question though: Can vinyls really be that bent? I feel like this is a bit exaggerated.

      Thanks! They can be, but I’m not sure they’d actually play 😅 Yeah it’s a bit much - I felt like I needed to exaggerate it a bit for something to actually “happen” in the video.

      I own over 2000 records and they definitely can warp like this. Usually when mailed incorrectly or left someplace hot like a car or mail delivery van. There are various vinyl flattening repair kits around that aim to fix issues like these. A buddy of mine has one that’s basically a pouch with the internals of an electric blanket and some heavy weights to sandwich the record between. He says it works pretty well but there’s still a slight warp even in the best cases.

          Yeah they’ll play. Terrible for DJing with though. The warp can affect the sound at times when it’s visible like in the animation but you can play them

    As someone who owns a lot of vinyl in various states, that is both a possible and realistic depiction of a pretty extreme warping. I have one or two that look exactly like this.

    I would say, though, it’s questionable stylistically why you’d want that much of a warped record in an otherwise clean (and context-free) scene.

      Well, I started doing the project because I wanted to try out an idea for animating something following a surface (like the pickup on the record), so I wanted a pronounced effect. I also feel like it gets a more “retro” and cozy feel to the scene - like someone has brought out that one beat-up record you play every Christmas. But in retrospect I should probably have toned it down a bit.

      For anyone interested; I have a mesh with a single vertex with a shrinkwrap modifier set to project and the target set to the surface (the record), and then I parent an empty to that vertex, and another empty to that empty (to have an offset). I then simply use a track-to constraint on the thing I want to follow the surface.

    Yeah, I agree the amount of bend to the vinyl looks a bit unrealistic but otherwise it looks quite good. Actually put on my headphones hoping to hear like an end of record clunk-scritch audio accompaniment haha.

    Pretty cool idea and nice execution.

    It looks a little bit odd to me that you can’t see any grooves in the vinyl. The arm is in focus so you should be able to see the grooves there.

    But all in all it’s a pretty nice animation.
