tl;dr (aka they buried the lede to make it click baity) Toyota thinks hybrids are a better use of resources than full-electric.
Which at this current time is true.
We’re limited by how much lithium and cobalt we can mine until better batteries come along.
My Escape plug in hybrid has an 11kwh battery and the pure electric range covers 90% of my use. My daily commute is completely covered by electric range and some errands. I can go over a month without touching the gas at all.
A full ev on the other hand would need to be 60-100kwh battery size. You can make 6-9 plug in hybrids for the same amount of battery materials as one full EV. And those 6-9 plug in hybrids would have a much greater impact on removing emissions than the one EV.
Note that regular hybrids change your MPG from ~25 to ~40 MPG. Over 2000 miles, that’s a reduction of 80-gallons down to 50 gallons.
So turning 8 cars into 8 Hybrids has the same effect as 3x EVs.
So even ignoring the “plugin” part, just the pure Hybrid part (ex: Ford Maverick Hybrid Truck) shows obvious improvements to carbon emissions.
Well, not just Toyota but also “TheDrive.com”. And myself, I think I agree with the message.
