I guess I could research but I thought I’d ask. I had a silver GC back in 2002-2004 and around 2009, my dork-ass brother mailed my GameCube to a friend across the country because he wanted to play an online game with him. Obviously I’m never getting it back, but I still have all the games and it would be cool to play them.

At this rate it may just be cheaper to emulate them and use a GameCube controller adapter for Smash Bros. to use the controllers.

Look at sites/shops available to you that sell second hand stuff, you can find good deals. You might consider getting a Wii, it sold much more copies than GC so it’s easier to find and white models can play GC games. You will probably need to buy GC controllers separately if you buy Wii. It is possible to use Wii remote instead trough mods but I don’t recommend that.

Oh, good idea! I forgot that the Wii was compatible. I wasn’t doing much with gaming when the Wii was current and never had one.

Wii is imo the best way to play them because the best you’re going to get from a GameCube without hardware modding or spending way too much on an active cable is S-Video. Wii component cables are all over the place.

I installed Nintendont on my old Wii and it’s pretty great.

    They’re readily available on eBay.

Unfortunately, they’re starting to climb the far side of the retro/collectability/desirability bell curve now. There was a time in the Wii’s heyday when you couldn’t give away a Gamecube, at at one point back when Gamestop was still involved in the business of selling games they were going for $20, complete and refurbished. Now they’re rising in value again, somewhere between about $50 and $150, it seems.

I’ll have to look in the basement when I get home. I am certain I have at least three of the damn things.

Getting a GC is not always cheap these days. My recommendation is to look on local sites. It may take a while, but you could get lucky one day. It’s probably still not gonna be cheap.

Like others have already said, the better solution is to get a Wii. Most models can play gamecube games, and they are incredibly easy to mod. I use my Wii to play tons of different games from multiple console generations. A modded Wii is an incredibly versatile device.

If you play digital copies of your GC games through Nintendont, games even perform a bit better.

And the there are of course the video cables. Getting component cables for your Wii is gonna be pretty damn cheap compared to the ones for gamecube.

I guess in the end you just have to choose: do you want the original, authentic experience from back in the day? Get a GC. Do you just want to play your games and get a better deal + many many extra features? Get a Wii.

    There’s no wrong choice.

I would actually check local pawn shops! Some are a total bust, but I have a great local one with fair prices, and you even have a week to test it where they will take it back.

This is quite a late reply obviously but now I’m curious if you found a GameCube in the meantime.

I got mine from a local Telegram group where people sell used stuff. So depending on where you live, a similar platform might get you a good deal. I paid 40€ for mine including a controller which I thought was quite affordable.
