TLDR - Blue cards will be for dissent and cynical fouls. Two blues means red. Blue plus yellow also equals red.

Weird.

Not convinced by this idea tbh. Feels like it’s probably going to add more areas of ambiguity and inconsistency within and between matches. Worth a try I guess, but I can’t see it working or lasting.

Based on previous discourse about the card system I think that you’ll generally see a tendency towards blue cards in the first half when a red card might have been given before. Referees have expressed a reluctance to show red early in the game, because an early red can seriously change the game in a way a late red doesn’t.

I think the blue cards will give referees more freedom to enforce the rules without completely changing the dynamic of the game, and as long as you don’t actually believe the refs are conspiratorially disadvantaging any teams then this is a good thing.

I think you’re right, but I don’t see it as a good thing

That’s not supposed to matter - it’s either a red card offence or it isn’t, regardless of the time on the clock. The ref is not there to ensure the match is entertaining or balanced. He or she is there to make sure the rules are followed consistently.

I think the blue cards will give referees more freedom to enforce the rules without completely changing the dynamic of the game, and as long as you don’t actually believe the refs are conspiratorially disadvantaging any teams then this is a good thing.

It will give them more freedom, but IMO this will mean more inconsistency, as similar fouls are punished differently in the same game (for the reasons you suggest).

Yeah, most of the professional referees don’t even have a handle on consistently enforcing the current rules. Adding this set of rules is like giving a dysfunctional, unstable person a baby to care for. It will only make things worse for everyone involved.

I imagine this’ll increase poor sportsmanship. It’s also already one of the highest injury sports for sprains, tears, etc. Don’t need that going up.

The ice hockey timed penalties always seemed superior to me, but not watching football.

I agree with it actually. Will make them think twice about taking a foul “for the team” and it could be more costly than just a card and then carrying on.

Agreed here. Yellow cards shouldn’t be a “get out of jail free” card for teams dominant enough to limit the opposition to low possession and very few good chances.

Yes they should, cynical fouls are simply part of the game and often elegant when they’re not dangerous. The player is making a trade-off and can’t commit such fouls when already cautioned. The big problem is that some players from certain teams can get away with making 4 fouls before even being shown a card.

The blue card doesn’t solve the issue of the fact that referees hardly enforce the rules consistently enough anyway.

Going down to 10 men in football for any period of time is insanely expensive, and we need less referee ambiguity determining the fate of games instead of more.

Yellow cards are already quite taxing in themselves over a season or tournament due to how accumulating cards result in suspensions.
