Judit Varga, who was expected to lead the ruling Fidesz party’s slate in the European Parliament election, also resigned.

Hungarian President Katalin Novak resigned on Saturday after coming under growing pressure as a result of her controversial decision to pardon a man implicated in a sex-abuse scandal last year.

Novak, a close ally and former family minister of Prime Minister Viktor Orbán, cut short a trip to Qatar and flew back to Budapest to make the announcement following protests in the Hungarian capital.

“I issued a pardon that caused bewilderment and unrest for many people. I made a mistake,” Novak said in a televised address Saturday, announcing that she would be stepping down from the ceremonial position as head of state.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

BUDAPEST — Hungarian President Katalin Novak resigned on Saturday after coming under growing pressure as a result of her controversial decision to pardon a man implicated in a sex-abuse scandal last year.

I made a mistake,” Novak said in a televised address Saturday, announcing that she would be stepping down from the ceremonial position as head of state.

“The validity of the president’s individual pardon decision requires the countersignature of the Minister of Justice,” Varga wrote in a post on Facebook.

In a bid to quell popular anger linked to the case, Orbán’s party on Thursday submitted a constitutional amendment to bar future pardons from in any way benefitting people convicted of committing crimes against children.

Novak was in Qatar attending the Hungary-Kazakhstan match at the World Water Polo Championship and had been scheduled to remain in the Gulf state through the weekend.

Hungarian media earlier Saturday reported that her plane had taken off ahead of schedule and appeared to be en route back to Budapest.
