Just saw a spectacular display in Zürich yesterday and I’m wondering for how long we will be able to see them. I mean, they are pretty terrible for the environment and the animals… but they look and feel so good!

Yeah, if we could just stop doing them, that would be great. Some places are replacing them with drone shows, which tbf i’m not sure if they’re really that much better. And in my personal opinion, they get boring pretty quick.

I generally see the enjoyment it can bring (especially to the younger folks), but I do not see it as necessary. It scares animals, generates toxic waste and releases toxic fumes.

    I could live without it.

I’m sick of them. I’ve seen so many in my life that they hold no wonder. I don’t feel like the medium has evolved much in my lifetime.

I still get some enjoyment from them and think that it’s a good way to entertain a large group. Their simplicity, and their transient nature is hard to beat.

Switzerland produces aroung 37 Mt of CO2 every year. Fireworks account for - drum roll - 78 t or 0.0002% of it

The Zürifest attracts about 800k people each day. Lets assume that tenth of Switzerland is responsible for ALL the fireworks CO2 of the whole year. That’s 97.5 g per person.

That’s less than a kilometer of driving with a car. Anyone who goes on a joyride or used their car recreationally in any way can just stfu about fireworks.

It’s really terrible for all kinds of pets and other animals. When my cat was still alive, I had to make sure to cuddle him before and through the major fireworks so he felt at least somewhat safe. And then there’s the people who light theirs during the day or way past midnight or on random days. I wouldn’t be surprised if there were more car/animal crashes during or immediately after fireworks than on regular dates.
