I can’t imagine this being a good thing. A past article quoted somebody as basically saying people would be trusted to use their best judgment to keep their vehicles in a safe operating condition.
This doesn’t even help low-income folks because the fee isn’t going away, the name is just changing.

The thing is, cops aren’t mechanics, so leaving it up to them to decide if someone they pulled over is driving a “safe” vehicle doesn’t make sense.
Until, of course, I remembered that they don’t need to be right to use their power against people they don’t like.
Oof, I mean I’ve seen some real beaters driving around here. Someone’s gonna get killed because of this. I can’t see how this is a good thing. Like inspections were $7 once a year. Not really an inconvenience.
Dont forget the part where you will now be paying a fee. What used to be paying for the inspection will now be tacked on to your registration as a fee
Doesn’t seem like a great idea seeing Texas drivers, but I was shocked to learn only like 15-20 states have mandatory vehicle inspection programs and cars 25+ years old registered as antiques didn’t have to do it anyways. So maybe it’s not as important as I thought and at least I don’t have to go in the shop once a year and get upsold
Honestly I don’t see any upside to this personally. I live in county that still requires emissions inspection so I’m not “saving time”. I’m still going to have to pay the fee it just got moved and renamed + .50. Cars that may have been found with issues will no longer be.
