Getting a lot of color wash when watching videos in the client. End up having to drop the resolution really low to make it behave. Are there any ways to make it stop doing this?

EDIT: Found Delfin on software manager. Seems to be behaving for now. Thanks to everyone that responded.

Uh, well I just tried a movie in the Android client and it didn’t seem to be doing it there. I honestly don’t know of any other desktop clients for Jellyfin.

Just ran across Delfin on the Mint software manager and it’s working so far. I’ll know if that fixes it soon enough. Seems to be fine though.

    Things to check:

    • does this happen on all clients for the same video(s)? (Browsers/computers/phones/tvs)
    • does this happen for all videos on the affected client(s)?

What color is the color wash?

Sounds like the video is using some kind of encoding that the client isn’t handling correctly.

Yeah, I usually check this stuff but the only place I watch the videos on my Jellyfin server is my PC. Though my kid never said anything about color washing on her devices and she watches them on like 5 different devices.

does this happen for all videos on the affected client(s)?

So do, some don’t. It was mostly 265 that was giving me issues. Though 264 would do it from time to time.

What color is the color wash?

      Green, blue, sometimes red.

Sounds like the video is using some kind of encoding that the client isn’t handling correctly.

That’s what was confusing me because it was the official server and the official client giving me issues.

Delfin seems to be ok though it’s GUI is kinda poop.

I’ve had a similar issue with a purple wash with HDR content; my TV wasn’t displaying it correctly but it was fine on my phone.

Unless you are transcoding a particular video, the server has nothing to do with it since it’s just sending the raw video stream.

On your PC the client probably uses the OS’s capabilities for decoding, so that depends on the hardware you have and the codecs that are installed. I can’t really help with that, but there’s gotta be more information out there.

What file, what format, what codecs? Web interface do the same? Does it show up in a screenshot? During transcoding or direct play? What if you play the file with another program?

    I’d guess something about HDR.

      What file

      what format, what codecs

      MKV/MP4, 264/265

      Web interface do the same?

Not sure. Slipped my mind to try that honestly.

      During transcoding or direct play?

Both. Though transcoding would seem to keep it to a minimum which is why I was lowering resolution to force it to transcode.

What if you play the file with another program?

Playing them in VLC directly from the file itself I’d have issues from time to time, but this was on another level. Like can’t see shit at all.

I probably should have waited a bit and some more troubleshooting before I made a post, I was just really frustrated.
