Nor under any other Republican administration. They’d never give up those additional house and senate seats, which would be very likely to go to the Democrats.

His base isn’t where he would incur damage. It’s at the margins where she could make an impact.
There are no margins anymore. This isn’t 1996.
Even the densest observers will acknowledge that politics at the margins is how presidents are made.
A split vote can easily flip a state to the other side. Hope she stays in it.
