What mud guards do you use and how do you like them?
I have these Whyte mudguards
I am in 2 minds about them, I primarily got them because I thought they would look good as well as being large enough to cover my 47 tyres, and they do look decent. I have also cycle commuted for 10 years or more and never had guards and bow I think I am stupid for not doing so sooner because of how much more comfortable and dry I am with them.
However these guards in particular are quite flexible in their construction and so when I hop over potholes and the like the landing will cause flex and for them to rub slightly. This is a minor niggle but I hate sounds coming from the bike of any kind that aren’t expected.
If I were to buy again I’d probably try a different set but also a lot of the options are too narrow for my application so I don’t have a lot of choice. I may try a different set for next winter.
I’ve got some plastic SKS fenders on my commuter. They’re pretty big, but they do the job!
I usually stick to a decent but inexpensive hybrid so I don’t really have to worry about bike thieves but I have a cheap folding ebike (EP2 Pro) I ride sometimes too. Eventually I’d like to get a better ebike and a road bike but money is tight.
I don’t commute but I’ve been thinking about picking up a folding scooter before classes in the fall. Anyone have any suggestions? I’d like it to be portable enough to carry into class with me so I don’t have to leave it locked up outside.
The SKS were the other ones I had found that I thought would be large enough and would probably be my next choice to try out.
It is one of those things where I can’t really warrant the cost right now when what I have works perfectly fine with just a minor annoyance that doesn’t change how effective they are at doing their job.
I was coming from some shitty Planet Bike ones that messed with the front derailleur so I sprung for something nice. I probably didn’t need to spend $60 on fenders but I was at the bike shop and bought them on a whim: No regrets!
I went with a 1x for this bike and was a bit worried that I was going to miss having the 2 cogs up front.
Occasionally I’ll find myself in a situation where one gear is a bit too high and one a little too low but for the most part I don’t regret it at all as I prefer simplicity for maintenance sake on my commuters. I did commute on a single speed for 2 years though which definitely built some character when it came to the hills xD
My only regret with these guards is not using guards sooner!
My pants snag on the derailleur sometimes, makes me consider picking up something with a 1x up front but the problem is, bikes cost money lol
From 2007 to 2010 I used to drive to the train to get the bus that would take to the ferry to get to work. Going from Queens to Weehawken was 2h each way. I’ve been working from home since then and so much happier.
A mix of my old steel trail bike and an electric folding fat bike that I never fold.
