forgotmyemail19: Can I use this if I don’t own a computer? I’m struggling to find cool things to do with my quest 3 other than play games or use it for working out. I want to watch TV or a movie on a fucking 500 ft screen. I go to the app store and I either need to side load movies and shows on to it or link to a computer. I currently don’t own a computer so I’m assed out.
Due_Parsnip_5631: Oh yeah I remembered you can use the bigscreen app and it’s free, there are free shows and there are rooms by other players where you can watch movies.
NewShadowR: Just use bigscreen beta lol. Virtual desktop is as the name implies, a way to connect to your desktop in VR.
Honestly surprised you haven’t thought to watch movies with bigscreen beta… That’s usually the first thing people do because its a free app and one of the recommended ones in the store.
Nhymn: Check out Bigscreen.
It does precisely what you are looking for. I really enjoy using it. I had a horrible stomach bug a few months back and laid on my couch and watched multiple movies and shows using it. You can choose what type of theater or scenery you want, where you want to sit, and has options for lying down.
Due_Parsnip_5631: Unfortunately you can’t, vd works like steam link, remote play and other streaming app, you need a pc for this to work, it acts as a alternative display for your pc like a bigger monitor.
DedicatedBathToaster: The one issue I have is when Facebook/Meta servers go down its completely useless.
NewShadowR: No it isn’t. Haven’t you read? The headsets can be used completely offline and I have done so many times myself, but a bug in their servers was actively disabling headsets that tried to connect to the server that day. A bug that they fixed and won’t be coming back.
PMmeEthereum: Can I just ask here — you can’t do this with a Mac right? Need a gaming PC?
rfow: Virtual Desktop works great with Mac, however, it can’t create multiple virtual monitors. You’ll get the image that your main desktop shows. They’re developing additional virtual monitors, though not sure when it’ll be implemented. You can even use the controllers as your cursor, which has been nice for when I’m scrolling or tabbing through work stuff.
To be fair, Immersed and Horizon Meta Workrooms are free applications that can do this as well, but I find Virtual Desktop to have the best performance of them all. I still use Immersed/Workrooms for work, but when that multiple monitor feature gets added, I’ll be solely on Virtual Desktop.
NewShadowR: How do you get multi virtual monitors with a PC? I’ve only ever seen one in VD.
rfow: You can’t right now, only in Immersed or Meta Workrooms (though, I’ve not tried either of these on PC, only VD). The VD team said it’s in active development though, so hopefully it’ll release soon. I’ve heard that if you physically have external monitors plugged into the source, they both should (?) appear in VD, but I’ve not tried it myself. My physical monitors went in the attic lol.
NewShadowR: Ah okay. Thought you meant like it could do on pc but not mac.
sw1tchf00t: Does it really have to be hard wired? I keep looking at the requirements and that one just kills me.
rfow: Hmm, that’s strange if it’s listed. My MacBook and MQ3 are connected to the same wifi, that’s all, I’m remoting in via Virtual Desktop right now. You’ll get a little notice under connected devices saying wifi could slow down the connection, as opposed to an ethernet connection – otherwise, works great remotely. I don’t even hardwire to my PC when I’m playing games from that via VD.
FolkSong: Virtual Desktop can be used both for 2D desktop streaming like this, and full VR game streaming (eg. playing Half Life Alyx running on the PC).
You’re probably looking at requirements for VR game streaming which requires a really picky setup. For streaming 2D content it should be fine with no hard wire, might have slightly higher latency.
Dan_Glebitz: Not looked back since I bought it.
CHoDub: I bought this for my Q1 and never set it up.
Is the video quality better then watching, let’s say Disney+, through big screen?
Can I stream from Disney or Netflix on my PC or is it only local files?
Budget-Special-7962: Streaming from pc is definitely higher quality than Disney plus big screen. I know because I used to do the same and switched. However I noticed if you stream to a Mac the player is blocked. On windows everything except Netflix app works.
CHoDub: Perfect, thanks for the reply.
I’m gonna try to set it up today
TheOnlyJonto: You’re watching anime on a virtual display the same size as a physical display? What is the benefit?
NewShadowR: Same question here lol. Seems like screenception. Don’t people use VR to watch cinema sized video? Whats the point of watching a 40 inch screen from 10 feet away in vr?
FuckIPLaw: And Bigscreen is free, too.
NewShadowR: yeah the only reason to use VD would be to sail the high seas for movies, since you can’t really do that on bigscreen.
darkelfbear: 4XVR can, and it’s free through AppLab.
Spiralty: If i am sitting somewhere else in the house and my room is a mess
NewShadowR: yeah but why that size and distance?
severanexp: I don’t have a physical display… or a wall to put it… and nothing as gorgeous as this?
Turndownforwhot: Then what are you connecting the virtual desktop to?
severanexp: My computer is hooked to a 24” monitor, not a big ass 55 or 65” tv man.
Turndownforwhot: We’re looking at a virtual 24" monitor my dude, that’s the confusion
Roofofcar: I’ll jump in. I often use this environment.
It’s immersion that cuts out distractions. The Ambilight effect is really cool as well.
My 34” 4K monitor is awesome, but often overkill, and sometimes I want to chill in bed and play with a game pad. Games like Hogwarts Legacy and Baldur’s Gate 3 rendered at 1440 look better on my Q3 than my 4K trying to pixel double, so I get extra frame rates even while streaming over VD, and it looks great.
ZunoJ: So … you do have a physical display
_malsI_kcuF: Bigger pixels
rfow: Throw that bad boy on in the Personal Theater environment brother.
pineapplekief: It really is a wonderful app. And I’ve been asked if I’m trolling when I suggest it and people find out how much it costs. But it really is amazing! And absolutely worth it!
artainis1432: Unfortunately, the developer has said they have no plans for a Linux client. Not everyone uses Windows…
Apprehensive-Cap4485: Was skeptical at first but VD is actually one of the few software I bought on Q3 that I didn’t instantly go ask for refund lol.
perez67: Virtual Desktop is a must have in my opinion. The apartment with the traffic at dusk is my favorite. Not to mention the ability to tweak my experience when connecting to my PC remotely. Has been worth every penny.
superschmunk: steam link also does it for free. Is the quality better with this app?
turbokinetic: Despite what the virtual desktop people are saying here, Steam link works perfectly for me, amazing quality, zero issues.
Soupy_Soupy_Soup: I second this.
Dan_Glebitz: I have tried both. VD is far better but obviously not free. You get what you pay for in this instance.
Griffon0129: I bought Virtual Desktop before the Air Link or Steam Link was a thing, it was the only way to play PC games wirelessly, though I paied $20 for it…
I typically just use the Air Link now since it seems to be more compatible with Steam games, though I haven’t tried Steam Link yet
qualitative_balls: Steam Link is trash so far in my experience. I had VD on my Q2 and did NOT want to buy it again on Q3 since I couldn’t get the account app sharing to work right.
I really tried to get the most out of Steam Link. It simply does not compare in any way to VD for streaming games or your desktop
asssmonkeee: You are using seperate accounts for the headsets? I upgraded to quest 3, signed in with my existing account and it seems to just work. And my kids use the quest 2 and it still played my games too. Is it supposed to be limited to one device?
edwardsc005: It isn’t limited to one device. The only problem you will run into is if you want to play together with your kids because a lot of those types of games would need a separate meta account for each person.
Avengersoul: I just got my quest 3 a week or so ago. I tried Airlink which was fantastic for me at least. Then tried Steamlink and I had all kinds of issues from it dropping resolution so low it looked like a 240p video… or flat out crashing.
Got virtual desktop as well and I like the customization you have… I’ve gone through all the codecs and stuff figuring out what’s best. I will say you have 2 VR “OpenXR Runtimes” which are VDXR (virtual desktops version) or SteamVR (Steams obviously) and SteamVR causes horrible pixelization when I tried to watch any VR videos, you’d see little black boxes all over the video in spots with movement.
I like Valve and Steam but whatever they have going on technically with this stuff, in my case, is absolutely unusable.
superschmunk: Ok virtual desktop it is.
VulpineKitsune: I haven’t noticed much difference myself, except that Steam Link eats a lot less battery than VD
senpai69420: Not even a competition virtual desktop is leaps and bounds ahead of the competition
DumbChineseGuy: So competition or no competition?
Spiralty: Not even competition. Virtual Desktop is way ahead
The80sDimension: It only supports one monitor though, no? I bought this app recently and got a refund, didn’t see the point when I couldn’t replicate my 4 physical monitors. And immersed is a no go because the text is blurry for me.
perez67: Yes, it’s only one monitor on screen, but I didn’t buy it for that. I actually got it because it was the only way to connect to your PC once upon a time before Meta stole the dev’s concept to implement the “Link” feature. I use it mainly to connect to my PC as it provides a better experience for me than using the Link software. Sorry to hear Immersed did not work out, that’s the only other software I know that allows multiple monitors (which is odd, now that I think about it. There should be more).
Keyakinan-: What do you mean by ‘tweak your experience when connecting to your PC’?
Rrraou: Silly question, but virtual desktop. Is it like remote desktop for your pc ?
Sheikashii: lol I thought it was real
Due_Parsnip_5631: For those wondering why am I watching on a small screen inside the headset,
- I’m just showing in my opinion how good it looks by just staring at it, I’m not really watching the entire show in this environment. There’s also a personal theater that has a bigger screen where I watch movies/tv series. I also play my pc games on this.
- I have a shitty real life pc set up and virtual desktop can make up for that. This video can’t justify the way it looks in person.
- Privacy. There are many people living on our home so having this kind of set up is like an oasis for me. Put a wireless headset on and I’m miles away from home.
deleteduser57uw7a: Is it reasonable to play fast paced games in virtual desktop
sykoKanesh: What show is it?
Aggravating-Mind-315: What LED’s are those?
fyrefreezer01: Its the VD ones, I don’t think they are real
Aggravating-Mind-315: Don’t think they’re real? What?b
Aggravating-Mind-315: Oh right
