    This is such a special part of Calvin and Hobbes that taught a lot of kids a little about a very hard subject. I’m disappointed that someone went and posted the rest of the story in the comments instead of letting OP continue posting on a daily basis.

        It was a thoughtful touch for Watterson to not show the raccoon to soften the blow just a little.

          I didn’t realize until you pointed it out that we never *see* the raccoon. Watterson made them so real in my mind that I never questioned it.

            You see a tiny bit of fur poking out of the box once, but that’s it.
