I’m new to colitis, but was diagnosed with ischemic colitis last year for the first time after a hospital visit.

Well, it happened again yesterday. I’m still mostly unfamiliar with the whole thing, but it absolutely sucks.

Question: how long does it take to stop shitting straight blood? This sucks.

Thanks.

EDIT: Seems to have stopped almost exactly 24 hours after it started. Cool.

The pain becomes mild discomfort and minor cramping around the 48 hour mark.

EDIT 2: Watermelon will save you life for both food and hydration.

But dumb fuck that I am, I felt the dire need for chips and salsa con queso today. It’s like I never learn! Fuckin’ idiot…

It depends on a whole lot: your body, environment, food intake, and meds. Your body and meds are probably the most influential factors. I started off on Asacol HD (mesalamine) pills and suppositories, and that took a few days to a week to start working. I can’t remember exactly, but it worked well for about 5-7 years. Once that stopped working, I was hospitalized for 2 weeks while they pumped me with prednisone IV to get everything under control. After that, they placed me on Humira (adalimumab). Now, if I miss a Humira dose and flare symptoms come back, they go into remission within a day of the Humira injection.

As far as environment, I have to be completely stress free. No work, no chores, no arguments. This helps speed up remission considerably.

Regarding intake, I eat super bland food with as little fiber as possible. Absolutely alcohol whatsoever.

edit: I meant “absolutely no alcohol whatsoever”.

Ok, first of, I’m sorry you’re dealing with this

Second, I’m sorry that my sense of humor is what it is, because

      Absolutely alcohol whatsoever

      in context, is absolutely hilarious.

(I know you likely intended to say “Absolutely no alcohol whatsoever”, but please don’t edit your comment)
