Oh boy, it’s happening! And sooner than I thought it would be!
Unions often wait for more than 50% of employees to voice support for a union before filing for a vote. Once the election process starts, management often holds mandatory meetings with staff to make the case against union representation, and that convinces some earlier supporters of the union to end their support.
This is why the Canadian province of British Columbia changed its laws in 2022 to card-check (single-step) certification which does away completely the need to have an election once 55% opt-in.
The union my company works with used to use check cards to do that here. Only they were telling people “yes” meant “I would like more information” rather than “Yes, I would like to join [the union that was offering lower wages and worse healthcare than we were getting at the time.]” (fwiw, I was not management back then. The company was paying us better than what they were promising to fight to get us.)
changed a fair amount from back then. Better leaders, fewer mobsters. Highly recommend unionizing. There’s plenty of managers that give a damn; but corporations certainly don’t.
