An Australian man has been freed after spending 36 hours trapped in a drain network.

He first entered a drain in Brisbane on Saturday “while trying to retrieve his phone”, according to authorities.

Reminds me of an old scifi story where an underground prison was actually upside down and secretly using artifical gravity to mislead all of the prisoners. The real way to escape was to go down.

On Tuesday, police said the man had been driving a “suspicious” car that reversed and struck a police vehicle around 4:20 (18:20 GMT) on Sunday, causing damage to both cars. No police officers were injured.

His car then sped off before being involved in a second crash, which caused “minor injuries” to the other driver, they said.

Moments later, the suspect allegedly abruptly exited the car and ran from the scene on foot.

“It’s amazing what people will do sometimes and what happens, so yes, there’s always surprises,” acting police commissioner Steve Gollschewski told media on Tuesday, when asked about the case.
