Now that the subreddit r/anime is permanently dark until reddit changed its mind on their API decision, is this where the community is migrating to?
It’s where I migrated to. Idk how many others will.
Start making c/anime the home you’re looking for, invite others to join. Or to other lemmy instances if filling the urge, or join other related communities as well. I left reddit years ago, when the privacy policy got relaxed to the point I couldn’t bare it anymore. lemmy.ml was the choice I made and I don’t regret it. I usually don’t have the time add content, but whenever there’s the chance I do so.
My taste on anime doesn’t match the current offer, I did enjoy serial experiments lain, most of ghost in the shell, monster, gilgamech, chrono crusade, blood the last vampire, blood+, blood c, princess mononoke, samurai 7, lunar legend tsukushine, tenjoh tenge, tokyo underground, spirited away, howl’s moving castle, ninja scroll (the movie and the series), ergo proxy, arjuna, all of xxxholic, the dog of flanders, legend of the millenium dragon, gungrave, voices of a distant star, children who chased lost voices, the place promised on our early days, perfect blue, hellsing, hellsing ultimate, tales of earthsea, rin daughters of mnemosyne, both budha films (sadly the 3rd one was not ever made), wolf children, the garden of words, knights of sidonia, akira, fullmetal alchemist, fullmetal alchemist brotherhood, X (the movie and the series don’t match), elfen lied, vampire hunter d, geneshaft, key the metal idol, the cat returns, the girl who leapt through time, grave of the fireflies, petshop of horros, king of thorn, vampire princess miyu, samurai champloo, my eighbor totoro, battle angel alita, ojiisam no lamp, noragami, death parade, your name, I also liked most of dragon ball, most of inuyasha, and somehow saint seija… I wanted to watch rahxephon, but never got it (I’m under the impression I might enjoy it). But what most of it has in common, is pretty much really old, and recently a couple of movies only, :( So in terms of anime I can’t share much, specially since that’s not something aired in most cases, and might get hard to get as well, but I keep an eye on this community to see what people is enjoying, perhaps something catches my eye, :)
It’s truly being a while since nothing is really clicking on me, but what sells change over time, and perhaps most people is really enjoying new shows and anime. For sure there’s more offer these days… There are some recommendations, like demon slayer, and attack on titan (it didn’t really captured my attention), between others, but I haven’t felt specially motivated to go for them. Still perhaps there’s hope, hahaha.
So again, it’s up to you to make this community your home. Perhaps not a replacement, but somewhere you can share, and maybe get some anime content you’d like to watch, and hopefully you’ll get fond of it at some point.
Yes, we’re the biggest anime community currently on the Fediverse… but 3K subscribers is still a far cry from 7M+. Admittedly, that’s an apples-to-oranges comparison since the subreddit has 10+ years of accumulated dead users boosting their stats, but 3 orders of magnitude is nevertheless a stark gap.
More importantly: there’s a decently large group of individuals who can be found participating in almost every single /r/anime discussion thread – people who go back years in the community – such as LeonKevlar and ShimmeringSky. If you frequented the subreddit, you’ve probably talked to them at some point and recognize their presence. IMO: without converting pillars like them, this place cannot claim to be the direct successor to /r/anime.
FWIW: we don’t need to be successors. Even if the subreddit dwarfs us, we’re still a top-50 Lemmy community in terms of subscribers (source). We’re big enough to have good discussion threads and those will be the engine of our long-term success. Everything else will come with time if we can just keep people coming back to talk about the things that they love watching.
It doesn’t really matter if the subreddit joins us or ignores us, because the subreddit never held a monopoly on anime discussion in the first place (e.g.: AnimeCorner Community, MAL Forums).
the community here is growing fast, already 604 subscribers
Subscriber counts are per-instance, if you open this community on lemmy.ml you’ll see over 3k subscribers. However, you’ll also see some missing or different posts and comments because the federation between instances is pretty wonky at the moment.
All that to say: There are quite a lot of people here already, but there are still some wrinkles to iron out before substantial parts of /r/anime could migrate here. I’d be happy if they eventually did though.
Dang, I really wish there was a way to see all users in a given community. Hopefully it gets implemented at some point, or things are just going to get confusing.
r/anime is not permanently dark, I don’t know where you saw that. It’s possible it could go dark permanently but the current status is that they will reopen the sub on June 19. You can check the status here: https://r-anime.moe/
I appreciate they are at least going longer than the original 48 hours.
Good. I don’t want to support reddit, but it would suck to lose that big community.
I wish. I think most people migrated to discord. Also FYI at this point it’s set to reopen next week.
I saw a post saying “r/anime is joining the fight”. The picture that went along with it was says the protest is going to keep going until reddit changed their minds.
I guess that was just a general picture.
LOL no. The mods weren’t taking this seriously, they were even posting on /r/anime while it was locked for everybody else. What a farce this whole blackout was.

Given all their automations, I reckon they could pull it off.

My thinking was: Setting up the software and keeping it running when a horde of users storm it (exhausting CPU and IO) are different things. Software (in general) sometimes behaves very strange at scale. I haven’t seen the source of Lemmy, and given that it’s written in Rust makes me feel positive about it, but strange things will(!) happen, and then you need professionals.
Well some of us. There are a few other anime communities here, so search them out and sub to them all.
