Because the government wants to incentivize building more manufacturing domestically instead of internationally. This is how things work.

So make it a legal requirement that devices sold in the US have chips made locally or have an added tariff. It’s not hard to figure out alternative solutions, they just don’t want to use them because…

      You know.

Sure but subsidies won’t generally be challenged in court like the others. It’s just the way the game is played in the United States.

I’m not saying it’s moral, I’m just saying that it’s the fastest way to get things done here.

Fabs are needed in the US for national security. It’s not economically feasible to build them in the US without subsidies so the US government is paying up to get them built ASAP. It’s really not that much money in the grand scheme of things, and the potential consequences of not doing it are severe. Yes, it’s gross and it’s stupid that this is how the world works, but this is how the world works.

Late stage capitalism. The only way to incentivize real production value in the US is to take from the taxpayers and give it to the corporations. There is no more real competition in America, it’s all been outsourced or bought by the government.

They’re cool. Both have given me minor software issues but I can’t think of a time they deliberately shit in my cereal then asked me if I liked it like both Intel and Nvidia have.
