Just a general thread about running. How’s your running going? What are you training for? Did you get new shoes? Sporting an injury etc…

I’m at the beach for Easter, so had a great 5km this morning along the hill roads then back along the beach. Doggo got to run off lead besides me, then we had a swim at the end of the 5km. Water was pretty brisk. Felt really good on the run.

10 miles Sunday, 4.7 on the treadmill yesterday, and 4.8 on hills this morning. So far so good!

Forgot to put this in my first comment - I’m training for the Bryce canyon 30k in May. The distance doesn’t scare me, but the altitude sure does.

I had an absolutely awful run yesterday, I think I was mildly dehydrated and went out on a 15km run in 34 C heat.

By 10km, I’d drank all the fluids I’d brought and I was done. I cut it short to 12km and dragged myself home where I proceeded to drink like 3 L of water and hydralyte.

So today just went for an easy jog at parkrun. Otherwise good.

I have been running for a while. I talk so often about how much I like running that I think that prompted my coworkers to start running as well. They’re now running regularly and getting into some races.

I am pretty well trained, so I can go faster and longer than any of them. But they’re all about 20 years younger than me. I am very conflicted about the fact that in just 6 months or so they’ll be passing me - running faster and likely longer. I’m happy/proud for them, for sure, but also a bit hurt if I’m being honest.

I’m not competitive against other people so I don’t care in that sense, it’s just that improving is so hard for me at this level. It’s hard to reach one’s limits I suppose.

It’s getting easier. I’m a heavy guy, and a run typically leaves my calves feeling like they were assaulted with a hammer. I’ve only got 70mi on my shoes, and they’re pretty comfy. So I think it’s something to get used to.

I’m training for a half marathon. I put in 7mi today when Hal Higdons plan only called for 4. At first I was very proud. But now I’m just tired and nauseous hahaha.

My personal recommendation is to be careful with the training. Stay close to the recommendations. If you go much longer than asked for (especially in speed, but also in time/distance) you might be doing yourself an disservice. There’s a certain growth curve for all the systems you’re improving, and if you shoot past that you’ll be objectively degrading other systems.

I got new shoes today; my first pair of proper running shoes in decades. Running in my hiking shoes was not comfortable, and I was using it as an excuse not to run. We’ll see if I actually start running regularly again.

Which model did you get? And good luck with the running, I definitely notice my running volume increasing when I swap out an old pair for a fresh one.
