This happened about a year ago but figured people here would find it interesting.
Police say a World War I German MG-08 machine gun has gone missing. The device was stolen from the Suffolk County Detachment of the Marine Corps in Bay Shore.
Military armaments historian Dan Templeton, with the Museum of American Armor, says the stolen weapon has gone through a decommission process which makes it inoperable and lacks value without a registered background.
Headline is pretty clickbaity by throwing the supposed value in.
$20k is about the value of a functional, registered MG08. This gun was, as the article admits, deactivated and not registered. It’s quite a nice paperweight, but not $20k nice.
I’m just appreciative the journalist didn’t call it a minigun.
Right, it’s clearly full sized.
It was probably taken as a display piece unless someone was as optimistic as they are ignorant.
I’d love to know what variant it is.
The headline makes this sound like a GTA mission.
LOL
I imagine it would be quite difficult to anonymously shoot anything with it tho.
It’s not operational…

Firstly, why the fuck was it on someone’s roof? Secondly, how the fuck do you steal that without being noticed?
The device was stolen from the Suffolk County Detachment of the Marine Corps in Bay Shore.
”It was originally out front but we decided to put it on the roof because we thought somebody would steal it," Air Force veteran Anthony Siano said Monday.
Look out Wonder Woman!
