Without being insensitive to the particular hardships endured by trans people - I couldn’t imagine going through a US male prison as a trans woman - is this a trans over-representation issue, or a too often used solitary confinement issue? Or maybe both? I don’t see any data for non-trans people. Maybe I’m not looking hard enough at the article.

Ya, my first thought was that’s a semi useless number without a comparison and then skimmed the article to see if there was, but there wasn’t.

I have 0 doubts it’s way higher than the non trans population, but for all we know it’s 80% for everyone else.

Providing the proper numbers would also then let is say things like 4x more often or whatever it is.

I’d also be interested in a breakdown by region

Idk the exact numbers, I could only find people in solitary at any given time or during a specific period, but 90% seems high. I did see research showing that Black people are over-represented in solitary, relative to prison populations. It’s pretty subjective who gets punished in what way, so I imagine officers’ biases are a big factor.

But solitary is definitely overused in general

90% is excessive either way, and what you are saying all makes sense, it would just be more meaningful if the research was in contrast to other groups is all. Would hit harder I guess.

The primary reasons cited by those surveyed for their placement in solitary confinement were disciplinary infractions (47 percent).

To be fair I wouldn’t be surprised to see the cis prison population have these same numbers. Most punishment for practically any infraction in prison is solitary. To make it out of prison without solitary is no easy feat

When it comes to US prisons I’d do the same as a cisgendered person. Fuck that whole prison hierarchy & power play shit. I’m pretty good being all by myself.

Are you implying you would want to be in solitary?

I think they are, but i suppose they had just the solitary “be alone” aspect of this in mind and not really solitary in a prison context. I mean, i would detest having to survive in a prison hierarchy, but solitary? No way, no one would really.

Yeah, it just seems rather dismissive of the serious issues caused by prolonged solitary confinement

Yes. I’m already terrible in handling people, let alone a bunch of dumbass criminals who think their life will be prison anyway. I’d be probably dead within a few weeks because I looked the wrong way at someone or because I refused to become someones personal bitch.

I feel like you might be basing your notion of prison on popular media portrayals. They aren’t going to shank you that easily. I think you’re also downplaying the horrors of solitary confinement.

Solitary confinement is not a good place to be even if you aren’t an extrovert. Prolonged solitary confinement is an inhumane practice. Plus people in prison aren’t all trying to kill each other. As long as you treat others with basic respect you’d do fine.
