Trigger warning: Sexual abuse, addiction and mental health.

In this powerful episode of The Overlap, Gary Neville sits down to have a heartfelt conversation with Dele, as he courageously speaks about his recent circumstances on and off the pitch and the profound challenges he endured throughout his childhood and long-lasting effects of trauma it has caused him.

Dele opens up about his recent battle with addiction and his remarkable journey of rehabilitation as well his unwavering aspiration to inspire those facing similar circumstances to speak up.

Dele hopes his brave admission can inspire others to seek the help they need. If you or anyone you know has been affected by any of the themes in this interview you can speak to the following organisations.

Incredible, strong interview. Always thought calling Dele lazy was unfair, he really seemed to lost his passion and spark for football. I wish he really finds it again and hell, I would love to see him return to Spurs and kill under Ange.

Sad stuff, but not uncommon for many of us “common people”. Still this post should be higher up in the community.

Great to see he’s bouncing back. Lots of respect for both of them, Gary handled it with grace as well.

That was like one of the most important footballer interview of all time. We are so used to newspapers telling stories that might be totally false and commenting on social media with extremely rude attitudes. Turns out they actually will read the comments, listen to the boos in the pitch and be affected by us.

This is so heartbreaking, it is nice that he apparently has his love for the game back

I wanted to make a De Brunye joke but this is some very sad stuff. Hope he can get back even partly to the level he once was if not the level he could have been.
