Hey dads, my wife and I got an email from the school district this morning saying that someone had emailed threats of violence to a lot of schools in my county.

They said there will be a police presence at all schools, and they don’t think the threats are serious.

My wife and I are keeping our son (6) at home today because we’re just not willing to take that risk. Are we being overly cautious given what the police say? What would you do?

Edit: Here’s an article about the threat that I just saw. Seems like it really was a stupid hoax.

I don’t think you’re being overly cautious. There’s no way he’s learning anything that’s worth risking his life for.

Yeah, that’s how I look at it, but then I start thinking about levels of risk. Driving the car involves risk, but very low. This email thing feels like higher risk, but is it really?

Only the person who sent the threats knows the risk but the “reward” part of the “risk vs reward” is basically nonexistent. He could miss an entire month of school and it wouldn’t make any significant difference, especially long term.

Depends where you live. In Canada I wouldn’t bat an eye. In the US they’d stay home.

I’m in the US, but I think I’d feel the same in another country, in fact maybe even more concerned, because it likely happens less elsewhere.

Are you in the USA? If so it’s probably not crazy to err on the side of caution

    (I am not a dad)

      Yep. I’m in California.

I did say to my wife that I don’t trust the cops to go running in to help.

Keep them home. This is the United States of America. Land of the free home of the mass shootings.

I’m sure your 6 year old would look fabulous in a bullet proof vest… No way in hell I would send my kid in. Good job!! (I’m in California too. Nope. No way!).
