How’s everyone’s experience been going with the AirPods Beta firmware? Any glitches you’ve noticed? Thoughts on Adaptive mode?

I’ll start off: I straight up don’t understand the point of Adaptive transparency. To me it just feels like a worse performing transparency mode, and doesn’t actually block out any noises I’d want it to. My connection and battery life has been good on the beta though, with pretty much only one major bug I’ve noticed. For a couple of days, one of the AirPods at a time would stop reporting its charge percentage to any devices until I put it in the case for 5 minutes. I’ve reported the bug, but also haven’t seen it again all week.

What about you folks?

I think it works mostly fine, some issues with the charging percentages as well, but they sound more balanced in both ears now. Prior my left pod would have less volume to the right.

I really enjoy adaptive mode, I basically just use that. It blocks out all the loud distracting noises for me, like on the bus or while walking, but doesn’t disconnect me from the world of happy birds tweeting etc. I also feel less nauseated while having a slightly higher breath when in motion.

Don’t really know about speech detection, as it is easier for myself, and more respectful to the speaking partner to just take one or both out.

I’ve found the device switching finally performs like the ‘magic’ that was promised! Adaptive mode has been pretty disappointing for me, I find that it allows in a lot more background noise than I’d like; I find myself just using Noise Cancellation most of the time still.

As far as bugs go, there have been more than a couple times where my headphones will disconnect temporarily and then reconnect for seemingly no reason. Battery life hasn’t seemed to be very impacted so far!

I definitely agree about the device switching improvements, it’s been working surprisingly well for me. Though I do wish they’d add a button on the device that steals the connection to return it to the other device, rather than just seeing that option on the device whose connection was taken.

Edit: it would appear I’ve caught a case of the dumb, that button totally exists

I haven’t used my AirPods much since getting the new firmware, but from the little time I used them, it felt good.
It mostly got rid of excessive noise, I noticed this while I was outside and cars passed by. The noise the cars made was diminished, but still just enough for me to be aware.
So far, I think I’ll be using Adaptive mode more often.

and doesn’t actually block out any noises I’d want it to.

Exactly, I’m experiencing the same thing. Too much noise is coming through… my first instinct was to turn it off.

Hopefully they will finetune it in the next versions.
