I actually think this makes for smoother reading versus the alternative of “he remarked”; “he snorted”; “he pronounced”; etc. Those phrases have their place but I think keeping it simple helps me make sure the line of dialogue itself conveys the tone of the speaker.
Absolutely. I don’t even know where this anti-said sentiment comes from. Famous authors all use “said” dozens of times per page. Why do aspiring writers think they can do better?
