I’m in the market for my first real pair of headphones for just listening to music. I’ve had a pair of Beyerdynamic DT770s for mixing, but now I want something to step my game up.
I’ve been looking at the Focal Clear MGs and I’m even curious of some Grados.
What do you have?
Beyerdynamic DT 700 Pro X and Sennheiser HD 6XX. Get the 6XX
Second this. My HD 6XX are phenomenal and got a whole bunch better when I paired them with E1DA Power Dac and utilised its eq curve. Probably the best $90 USD item I have ever purchased in Hifi. It solves all the HD 6XXs minor issues around response rate. Highly recommended (but you will need to get a balanced cable to make it work as the Power Dac only works with a balanced connection).
I have Koss Porta Pros, Sennheiser 650, 595, 598 (closed back). For mixing I use a pair of Sennheiser 280s; they are cheap, reliable, and have a very flat balance. When I am listening for fun I run all the headphones with a simple FiOS Mont Blanc headphone amplifier.
Fostex T50RP-mk3. Great elements in crap plastic packaging. Got third party leather pads and headband, and was planning to 3d print new cups and mod them but never got around to it. Hooked up to a DragonFly USB, and I slapped a ModMic USB on them so they’re currently being used as a headset for my computer.
Very cool! I’ve heard mixed things about ModMics. Do you rate them, or is it just means to an end?
I wanted a computer headset with good sound, and attaching one to a hifi headphone seemed like an easy way to do it. Got the wired USB version since I’m going to use it with my PC anyway so wireless would just be annoying when running out of batteries. I’ve only used the mic for voice chat (i.e. no streaming or recording) but it does its job. It has a switch for directional mode but it doesn’t make any difference at all, my friends still hear my wife gaming at her desk 2m away just as clearly as they hear me speaking 3cm from the mic. The cable clips catch on on clothes, armrests and the edge of the desk occasionally which is a bit annoying but I can live with it. Uses USB audio standard so it was plug-n-play on Linux.
Sennheiser 599
Grados are great. The downside is they really don’t represent the original mix. They add their own flavor to the sound which can be fantastic. The only thing is since they are on the ear phones they hurt my head after 2 hours or so.

Sennheiser HD 598, bit old but still working well, they’re spectacular for listening to music, especially Classic.
