Christmas specials don’t count. Intermediate trilogies where David Tennant is the Fourteenth-and-a-Half Doctor or whatever don’t count. The new era of Doctor Who, with Russell T Davies back as the showrunner and Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor, only really begins here, with the new season proper. The first double bill, comprising Space Babies and The Devil’s Chord, points to a stellar future for Who as a youthfully chaotic playground of the imagination, far more fancy of foot and light of outlook than it has been for years. It only takes baby steps, for now, towards that new destination, but we can see it.

Doctor Who is on Disney+ at midnight and on BBC One at 6.20pm on 11 May

Hold on! Is this the dirty deal we made for all that American wonga?

Yes. It is no longer on the free to air (Aussie) ABC which has shown every other Dr Who season since episode 1 and maintained interest by showing repeats through the dark times when no new shows were being made.

The ABC even resurfaced episodes that the BBC had lost.

Not sure which is worse a Dalek invasion or Disney. They will come for Star Trek, Dune and DC. They will come.

I’m glad it looks good because the Christmas special made me Cringe and my kids decided they aren’t really interested in watching the new series if it’s like that. For context, they’ve rewatched everything from Ecclestone onwards several times.

Man, I saw a trailer and was disappointed. I love the actor in Sex Ed, and thought he’d be a great fit for The Doctor, but his performance didn’t feel like The Doctor. Less ‘scatterbrained quippy genius’ and more ‘snarky Gen Z know-it-all’.

Hopefully the show itself isn’t so… quirky?
