Ukraine’s troops withdrew from several areas of the country’s north-east amid mounting pressure from a new Russian offensive, as the president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, postponed all foreign trips underscoring the seriousness of the threat.

The moves came as the Russian president, Vladimir Putin, said Moscow’s latest operation was “going to plan” and Russian forces were improving their positions daily even as the US rushed to resupply arms and ammunition to Kyiv.

Ukraine’s chief of general staff said late on Tuesday that troops fell back from areas in Lukyantsi and Vovchansk near Kharkiv “to save the lives of our servicemen and avoid losses”.

Moscow launched a surprise major ground assault on the Kharkiv region last week as it sought to advance while Kyiv is struggling for arms and manpower.

This is not good. I was hoping the attrition would last. Apparently not.

It’s not good, but it’s coming at a cost. ~4500 casualties on RU side in the last 3 days. That’s hard to comprehend.

Not that it makes it a whole lot better, but casualty != killed. Casualty, in this context, just means forcefully removed from combat.

It’s like world leaders want Russia to win; making a show of donating insignificant amounts of old weapons systems they had lying around, but not actually doing enough to ensure Ukraine’s victory.

Ukraine had momentum and Republicans undermined our collective efforts.

The US isn’t the only one though, it’s the same everywhere except the countries that Russians have occupied.

The entirety of Europe has given more than the US by like… 20%. So losing the US aid meant nearly halving the total support.

Right, and which part of that makes saying “the problem isn’t just the US” untrue? If anything that underlines the fact that everybody should be chipping in more

To be fair, that’s also about how much the EU plus the UK’s combined GDP is versus the US. In any case, governments around the world need to step up aid to Ukraine to prevent Russia from cementing its hold on Ukrainian territory.

The way i remember it, in mid-late 2022 there was bipartisan support in Congress for sending more and more advanced arms but the Biden admin slow-rolled it because of escalation fears.

This is the best summary I could come up with:

Ukraine’s troops withdrew from several areas of the country’s north-east amid mounting pressure from a new Russian offensive, as the president, Volodymyr Zelenskiy, postponed all foreign trips underscoring the seriousness of the threat.

Ukrainian military said late on Tuesday that troops fell back from areas in Lukyantsi and Vovchansk near Kharkiv “to save the lives of our servicemen and avoid losses”.

Against the backdrop of renewed Russian pressure, the US secretary of state, Antony Blinken, sought to reassure the ally of continuing American support, announcing a $2bn arms deal.

The United States is rushing ammunition, armoured vehicles, missiles and air defences to Ukraine to ensure their speedy delivery to the frontline, added Blinken on Wednesday.

Dmytro Lazutkin, the spokesman for the defence ministry, said “some” Russian infantry groups had entered the town, which military analysts believe Moscow needs to capture to continue its offensive thrust in that direction.

Russia is opening new fronts in order to stretch Ukraine’s army, which is short of ammunition and manpower, along the approximately 620 miles (1,000-km) frontline, hoping defences will crumble.

So what’s the problem? Lack of arms? Has the new aid had time to make its way to the front yet? Or is it lack of soldiers? That would be harder to solve.
