Its a shame that they did that, especially since the largest neurodivergent community on lemmy was over there, but for anyone who calls this instance or lemmy.world home I saw we make this the new one.
Why did they defederate us, wtf?
is their announcement, xposted to our instance: https://sh.itjust.works/post/107627 the tldr is that they don’t like our open registration policy and claim that there are people here trolling their users, which IMO probably means they are having difficulty moderating their instance and decided it was easier to go the nuclear option.
Edit: it appears their claims were true, there were a few bad apples using this as their home instance and harrasing users over there. Kinda sucks b7t what can you do. I think they made a valid decision in defederating, but it is going to be anoyying having to deal with the early stages of instances figuring out which other instances to defederate with and the instance that is right for me, and then resubscribing to all the things I want in my feed again. Hopefully this process will get streamlined and better with more developers working on lemmy/kbin.
IMO moderation necessarily has to exist two places in a federated environement. Yes, the community (hosting instance) always has to do moderation, but so does the federating instance. If the federating instance does not have policies in place to handle bad actors who go to other servers and break their rules and it is a large enough problem this action could make sense even well into the future. Unfortunately Lemmy is in a quite early state so I don’t think the tooling to do such work well even really exists. Something like only allowing confirmed posters from federated instancea or requiring someone to be subscribed for an amount of time before posting could do wonders. Yes, this is the nuclear option, but their choices at the moment are a butter knife or a nuke.
I sincerely hope this gets better as Lemmy matures.
Mastodon had similar conflicts between free speech absolutist servers and servers who wanted a hate/bigotry/pedo/whatever free experience.
Yea I pretty much agree, they probably didn’t have enough people to arm with butterknives to host their instance the way they wanted to, so they felt they had to go nuclear. It would be nice if there was an option to defederate in a way that other instances could still view and subscribe to your content though. I don’t want to use a separate account or go to another website just to see what’s going on in [email protected]
WTF i have to catch up with that. Do the Lemmy wars already start?
TBH, now i’m glad i noticed early what kind of community would gather there, and went to make my main account somewhere else. Well, let’s see if we can analyse some underlying patterns there, shall we? (in order to get this aligned with the intended theme of this community … i’m still composing/channeling a sticky post)I can somehow sympathise with it when people feel insecure in a public space, and they’d rather be able to lock the door. (well i feel like that myself and i’m still uncertain if i should actually expose myself here)
What many (seem to!) fail to see, though – that is if one were to wall themselves off, that will create an echo chamber, and that again will not foster a healing. It will be dividing instead of connecting. I see that pattern mirrored in many aspects of societies.
It would certainly be more easy to gain understanding and sympathy when people could actually meet face-to-face. “In the internet”, certain neuronal triggers that happen on meeting another human are simply missing, so some people’s natural attack inhibition might not work. How do we see all that information about instances? Their restrictions, defederations, etc. I can’t seem to figure out where all that info is readily available. I’m on the Jerboa app if that matters.
Good question, I tried looking in the modlog (instanceurl/modlog) but i t doesn’t appear to list instance defederation or anything like that. I know theres a website that can show you federation connections between instances but idk where that is or if it will even be up to date.
Hoping that there will eventually be a sidebar feature, of sorts, on the instances that will show some real time information. That’s kinda the coolest thing really, seeing how things will progress from here.
I’m, of course, useless in terms of any script, coding, etc. But very much appreciate those who have the skill lol.
I saw and I get why they did it, but honestly one of the reasons I came here was because I didn’t have to provide an email (I don’t want to be found online via email for my own reasons) or a statement of why I felt I belonged there. I liked what they were trying to do, but the gate itself was what kept me from going there.
I just didn’t have it in me to provide yet another justification on why I should be allowed in to a safe space.
lemmy.world and shitjustworks will stand together against this wahhhhh
Thank you!
