    Except many apartments will have Google, yelp etc reviews so you can go read those.

    I actually asked my last two landlords for references, which they provided. The current place I’m renting, the previous tenants are actually my neighbors!

      This should be the norm. But you should ask for contact info for all tenants for a given time period. Not just ones cherrypicked by the landlord.
