Hello all, As you might be aware, lemmy.world has gotten rather large. It is so large infact that when it goes down it takes a large portion of content with it. I don’t know about you but I personally don’t like the idea of all lemmy activity happening on one instance. Because of this I have made the decision to move this community to a place that is smaller.

Yet you picked a place using a TLD that’s ripe with potential problems and exploits.

I wish you well, but I’m personally never going to a website that is using the zip TLD.

I personally don’t see the issue. A webpage isn’t inheritly or good based on its URL. What we should be focusing on is hardening the browser

Some networks have those TLD blocked and banned for good reason. Hardening the browser doesn’t mean anything when it’s exploiting the URL specification and social engineering.

The domain is dumb, dangerous, and its use should not be encouraged. Please consult the many infosec professionals who have talked about this already.

i have blocked all .zip domains in my mother’s adblock for this exact reason (and my own, but i know how to unblock them). and i’m saying she’s going to be visiting lemmy, i’m just giving an example

especially as many lemmy urls end in @domain.xyz already, lemmy is the worst place to start using .zip tlds

It looks like going to Lemmy.zip is a bad idea, since .zip TLDs are usually used for nefarious reasons. Is there a certain reason you’re going to that one instead of somewhere else?

The new community looks dead on arrival. I wonder if anybody is interested in modding the old community. Maybe by communicating with the instance admins someone could take over the community
