The best increase in productivity for me has not been communities I have followed but instead communities that I explicitly do not follow even if I know I will enjoy them. I used to subscribe to topics on Reddit such as WhatCouldGoWrong, AmItheAsshole, and RelationshipAdvice but they can be time sinks - so I am distinctly avoiding those types of communities this time around.

I did this with YouTube, installed an extension called Unhook that lets you turn off YouTube’s homepage recommendations, sidebar recommendations, comments, end video recommendations etc. and it’s been a huge help for me. I’ve gotten used to my YouTube homepage looking blank now with just my subscribed channels and playlists on the left. You can configure it to redirect you to subscriptions from homepage though if you don’t like homepage being blank.

Definitely trying this out. It would be great if there was a single all-encompassing app that did this for other Social Media / News sites.

It’s just like me and sweets. If i do not have them in my house, I do not eat them.

Haha exactly. It’s easy for me to skip crap food when shopping, but once it’s in the house I’m eating it.

I think just anything that is related to my own overarching goals and energizes me to pursue them is going to have a positive impact. That’s going to be different for everybody.

I think a lot of things have a negative impact, and in that sense I’m so glad that reddit forced me to leave. I overwrote and nuked a 10-year, 200k karma account last week. There’s so much crap that you can get sucked into on a platform like that. I remember periodically going through my subreddit subscriptions and unsubscribing just to save myself from doomscrolling. I’m ok with spending a lot of time enthusing about things that are relevant to my main goals, but cat videos aren’t part of that.

We’re losing access to beehaw sublemmies as they are defederating from us. Might need a local DIY
