Turns out I had a mulberry tree growing near my apartment the whole time. While it would have been nice to have a few more mulberries for the filling, it still came out good with this recipe:

How do you keep the birds out of your mulberries long enough to get ripe? Not a big fan of netting trees… but other options are fair game.

Huh… never seen this, I’ll have to check it out. Got some wild black berries I’d like to protect too. I try it out on them. Thanks for the idea.

When my parents had a vegetable garden they hung up those tin foil pie pans and it kept most of the birds away.

I’ve done the pie tins and cds and stuff, results were always wildly inconsistent, but a lot of old timers around here do that.

Well, I don’t, this was just luck. These all came from a tree near my apartment that my girlfriend spotted. She noticed them when they were unripe and went out as soon as they were ready but she definitely had competition from the birds.

Edit: she mentioned that the tree was near the road by a bus stop, so the traffic may have kept them from eating too many of them

Ahhh… I bet you’re right. Mine are all out in fence rows, where I don’t see them unless I intentionally go after them.

Growing up we had two large mulberry trees in the yard, and every summer I was sent out daily to pick a bucket full of mulberries. My Mom made mulberry syrup, mulberry jam, mulberry clafouti, put them in fruit salad, and, of course, made mulberry cobbler.

This brings back memories. Thank you for sharing!

This was my first time trying mulberries and I can say I’m now a fan! Sounds like you had good eating back then :)
