I’m receiving unwanted and unsolicited DMs on my account, but I don’t want to use DM.

Currently, there appears to be no possibility to disable DMs however, which IMO should be an option that needs to be developed with priority. But I’m not a developer and it’s obviously easy to ask for prioritized options to be developed if you don’t have to develop them yourself. And of course, I haven’t got a clue what else has priority.

That said: where can I submit a feature request for the Lemmy developers?

And does anybody happen to know if it’s possible to block DMs on Kbin?

You can submit new feature request on the official GitHub, go to issues in top menu, then new issue on the right, and choose feature request.

You cannot block a user that already send you a message.

You also cannot delete a DM unless the administrator helps you. If you receive abusive material you’re more or less stuck with it.

I don’t want DMs, but I must accept them now.

Do you mean that blocking them doesn’t remove the DMs but does prevent future DMs? Or you literally actually cannot block someone once they’ve DM’ed you, and so standard practice for someone who wants to harass people should be to DM them first?

No, what I mean is that any user can randomly start sending DMs to another user and I don’t want any DMs.

Blocking is an action when the DM was already received.

Can you view only unread messages in your interface? That’s a feature in most places I’ve seen so far, but I haven’t tested Voyager.

Some, if not most mobile apps don’t even support DMs at all, so you can use those.

(Which is annoying for people who want to communicate with others who don’t realise their app doesn’t have DMs. But I guess it’s also a feature.)

I’m also guessing someone could probably make a browser script to hide the section with messages.

Thanks for the suggestion, but that’s not a suitable work around for me.

I use Voyager and consider it by far the best client, but I’m not going to switch apps because Lemmy doesn’t allow DMs to be blocked.

It’s also not just about hiding, but the sender should be aware the DM cannot be send.

If someone wants to bother you and sees that you can’t receive DMs, they might choose to bug you by other means. If their messages just go into a deep pit with no answer, they might get tired and leave it be. At least that’s how it works in gaming.

Totally get it. I agree. While you wait you could probably use a browser extension to run custom css that hides those features. Hiding any elements that match label[for$="-messages"] is probably a good start

Unless I missed it I do not see a setting for this.
