I feel weird doing this, but some communities have been appearing in my feed that I have no real interest in, and I’m wondering if the appropriate response is to block them. That would take them out of my feed, but it feels mean to me for some reason. What are all of your thoughts?

Does the blocking functionality even work? Pretty confident it doesn’t based on the code.

I didn’t look at the code for blocking users.
I blocked a hentai community and I haven’t seen them since. So I think it probably does work , at least this one time i did it.

It worked. I tried it on GI Joe and the community disappeared from my feeds and stopped showing up in my searches.

The only one I have blocked so far is a nsfw community. I do not think it is mean, but I understand how you feel, because I did feel a little mean when I blocked them, lol. But it does not affect the community at all not to show up on my feed, they are not losing any interaction from anyone else because I blocked. It does affect me to have their posts on my frontpage, though. So I blocked them.
You could also subscribe to the communities you are interested in, then change your default view to subscribed communities.
I’d think you’d really only want to block communities that are so horrible that just being aware they exist is more than your mind can stand.

What I used to do on the link aggregating site I used to use (last week), was spend most of my time viewing just what I was subscribed to, then, when I’d seen everything there, I’d spend some time viewing everything, just to see what else was out there.
Been doing the same thing in Lemmy.
The “All” feed in Lemmy tends to be like drinking from the firehose occasionally. You’re scrolling and reading posts, then suddenly three dozen new posts show up and boot you out of your place. You lose the post you were about to tap, and now there’s dozens of posts to scroll past again.
I know there was an issue the devs were working on related to that. Not sure if they’ve straightened it out.
The fix for that issue is planned to be released with version 0.18.
Of course, it’s part of curating to see what you like and seeing less of what you don’t like. Frontpage feeds are great to discover new stuff, but in oder to keep the it healthy like with any other social media platform you should curate it over time.
Just go to your subscribed community section and only look at those.
