    Can someone explain to me what the date on the license plate is for?

      Temporary license plate, either the date it was issued or the date it expires. Just meant to get you in the system and keep you legal till the permanent ones come in.

      Do you not have temporary tags where you live? These are usually assigned to you at the dealer when you purchase a car as an in between so you can legally drive to the DMV and get your affairs in order … also sometimes issued as temp tags when you lose yours or have it stolen.

        Here tags go with the car and never change. You also don’t have to go to our equivalent of the DMV when you buy a car, the dealer can just log in to the website of the ‘DMV’ and register it in your name.
