Never ask a man his salary, a woman her age, or Kyle Gass what he wants for his 64th birthday.

I don’t understand how people are framing this as Jack black fucking up. What’s the problem, exactly? I haven’t really followed this saga, but from what Ive gathered, KG made a joke about the assassination attempt, they got backlash for that and they canceled the tour for safety reasons. How is this a failing on JB’s part?

It’s because of Jack Black’s response. He said he was blindsided by Kyle’s joke and that it was his decision to break up the band.

I was blindsided by what was said at the show on Sunday. I would never condone hate speech or encourage political violence in any form. After much reflection, I no longer feel it is appropriate to continue the Tenacious D tour, and all future creative plans are on hold. I am grateful to the fans for their support and understanding.

Oooh, so he’s kinda throwing KG under the bus a bit. Interesting.

At least, that’s how that statement comes off. It sounds like he’s considering never working with Kyle again over the joke? If that’s what he meant, then yeah, that’s a really shitty thing to do just to save face for himself. Jesus. Thanks for the info.

They want JB to stand with KG and not apologise, regardless of if it was a joke or his actual beliefs.

I don’t know where I stand tbh, I’m all for edgy humour, and it seemed like a joke to me. So I kinda found it endearing? But I can understand JB having an issue with the statement and how it affects his persona. I feel like KG is in the wrong for putting him in this situation really

But, like…I don’t get why people are pissed with Jack specifically. They’re public personalities. Of course they have to come out and say making a joke about encouraging assassination was all a joke in poor taste or whatever PR bullshit. And it seems like the canceling of the tour was for safety reasons, not because Jack was upset with the joke. Am I wrong? What am I missing?

I don’t think you’re missing anything. They literally just want JB to stand with KG and not apologise. They’re angry at JB specifically, because conservatives attacked him over KG’s comments, as JB is the bigger more well known figure and it makes a better headline.

I feel like it’s an insane opinion if you have more than a passing of knowledge or compassion though, and I can’t give you a definite reason why this commenter in particular is raging

Someone else gave a pretty good reason in a comment. It’s basically that the media is using JB’s name to drive engagement because everyone knows him and pretty much all the people who are now pissed at Jack black are just falling for rage bait. That’s kinda the type of explanation I was looking for. It’s capitalism. Capitalism is always the root of all problems. The media needs our attention and it’s using name recognition and faux drama to get it. End of story, pretty much.

Articles have been pushing that JB is the deciding force in this decision, likely to drive clicks and engagement since JB is the household name and KG has significantly less reach. The misunderstanding that arises from that (where people think JB did this, rather than a mutual thing) drives further engagement.

Example, here’s the results from the news section on Google:

From my understanding this is kinda a stunt to prevent backlash and such, and I assume they’ll get back together after the election

      That’s my line of thinking.

Given the image Jack Black cultivated for himself, being around anyone who wished for a political figure’s death will work against that image, no matter how much Black may agree or disagree with Kyle. It’s a perfectly understandable decision and I doubt it’s permanent.

My six year old is really into some of their (more age appropriate) work. I can’t break it to him.

You gotta wait at least a week. JB fired Kyle before, you never know

I mean, it only took a week when Kyle quit the band. Let’s give it some time.

Prove that they don’t care about “cancel culture”. They were just angry that they were not the ones doing the cancelling.

They have always cancel and will always cancel others.
