Other than the general problem that the US has with firearms, how is this a problem?
Correct me if im wrong or missed something but, They never actually say if the guns were used in crimes, only that they were sold back to the manufacturers.

So no, they weren’t necessarily used in the crime. Like, if my fingerprints were on a murder weapon, it doesn’t mean it did it. It’s just weird that my prints would clearly be left on a gun right before it was fired for a murder
