We largely operate in a closed loop when it comes to the broad strokes of stories in literature, art, and media. For me it’s interesting to see where the variations take us. I think you’re right that Dune was influenced by works like Homer’s Odyssey. Then Star Wars was inspired by Dune (allegedly). And tons of newer stories have been inspired by Star Wars.

The use of “Atreides” in Dune is not merely a stylistic choice but a deliberate reference to the deep mythological and literary heritage that The Iliad represents. By drawing on the legacy of the Atreides from Greek mythology, Frank Herbert imbues his characters and story with a sense of epic gravity and connects the futuristic saga of Dune to ancient themes of heroism, fate, and the burdens of leadership.

Fate is crucial in The Iliad, with characters often struggling against predestined outcomes. In Dune, Paul is haunted by visions of the future, highlighting the theme of prophecy.
