I find it amazing that people, and mostly journalist, still think he’s confused by this when he’s clearly just being racist by trying to play Indian Americans against African Americans while feeding his base bigotry they’ve crave.
Feeding his base absolutely. However to my mind it’s selling Asian and black Americans short to think they will take Trump’s comments and be upset with one another rather than with trump himself.

I know at least one person that it’s working on.
To be fair, it must be a very difficult concept for him to comprehend. After all, he’s a pure-blood orange asshole.
You have to explain a similar concept to him in terms he can understand.
Donald, it’s similar to how you were born an American, but now you’re working for Russia.
It’s like how you’re white AND orange

While you are correct in that there is no scientific methodology for identifying race, as long as people think and act like there is - and use the concept to oppress others - it’s less than helpful to deny people’s lived experience and say “this is all imaginary”
“I don’t see color” said the unintentional racist
Yes, but to give the commentator the benefit of the doubt I think they mean it’s a social construct.
Nah man, you pink
Well, yeah, in the same sense that all pain is psychosomatic.
