I’m not from the US but I struggle to understand how this presidential pardon thing works. Somebody quietly lobbies the president (money/favours exchanged?) so the president just decides they should be freed, justice system be damned? Is this the Liberty that the USA promotes?, Liberty to free the guilty if they can schmooz the prez, Liberty to get out of jail even when guilty of crimes?
Hypothetically, it was supposed to be a check on the power of the counts, so that if they made a grave mistake that there was a way to overturn it. Clearly that’s not how it works in practice.
