      This.

The Russians are famous for losing ships. They’ve been doing it for fucking years. They lost what two whole fleets to the Japanese a hundred years ago. So, they are just bound to lose a fleet or two in whatever engagement they are in. I’m surprised they haven’t lost one with their African excursions latelt.

Whereas with this, they are supposedly a near peer to the US in land air war (they aren’t). Invasions of Russia tend to turn out poorly. So if this sticks it is just humiliating.

Wasn’t there like this whole expedition where a Russian fleet sallied forth to sail basically to Japan or something and they were so fucking incompetent it’s a wonder they didn’t drain the ocean?

Yeah, that was I think the Baltic fleet (might have been Black Sea) going over to do some revenge on the primitive Japanese after the Japanese sunk the Russian Asian fleet.

And they would have ruined everything along the way if they weren’t comprehensive fuckups? Like they shelled a British fishing fleet and scared off all the fish, that kind of thing.

God I want to see them lose a fleet in CAR it would be funnier than losing to a country without a navy

They lost what two whole fleets to the Japanese a hundred years ago.

yeah that one makes me want to see a repeat. it was so perfect, the ideal intersection of hubris vs skill and hilarious ‘doubling down’ on failed adventurism.

just on that note, hey, China, the nine dash thing isn’t working. Instead of picking a fight with the entire south pacific, perhaps… take a cue from the Russo-Japanese war - look north man, there’s shittons of resources up there, and space… tons of space. Hell, get Yongmingcheng back and just… see where it goes.

THE REST OF THE WORLD WILL NOT COME TO RUSSIA’S AID. Give it a nibble, russia’s had ages to exploit these resources and barely sprinkled the lands with their people.

You could fight everyone in the south pacific over taiwan, or, you could fight the second best army in russia. So many benefits.

I’m sure they could come up with a bullshit map somewhere to justify it. Just send it Trump with a sharpie or something.

    Is there a legal invasion?

Edit: actually, in Russia this invasion is probably legal. Though of course it’s not an invasion.

The term “legal” immediately leads to questions about which law or standards are being applied. The more important idea is “will significant portions of the international community object to this action?”, while obviously excluding rogue and pariah states.

Using the more practical standard of pissing off other countries, yes an invasion can happen under pretenses that won’t draw international ire. A great example is peacekeeping. If the government of a country collapses for whatever reason, a UN sanctioned force will frequently invade that country and keep a lid on things to stop violent groups from rising up in the ensuing power vacuum. This is happening right now with Kenyan troops in Haiti.

Other examples of “legal” (justified) invasions are for regime change and counterterrorism actions, but these are far more controversial (depending on the circumstances) and/or might be accomplished with a raid.

The one thing that is pretty sure to piss off just about everyone is invasion for the purpose of territorial gain. Everybody except for the usual suspects (China, Russia, Iran, and North Korea) thinks that’s not a cool thing to do these days.

Kursk - sounds like a sunken submarines name to me. Hm, wonder why. ^ ^
