They still have those in Europe, between Sicily and the Italian mainland, and a few across the Baltic (Trelleborg, Sweden to Sassnitz, Germany, which was used by passenger train services, and Ystad to Swinoujscie, which is freight-only). There was one along the Hamburg-Copenhagen route, but the facilities were demolished to build a tunnel under the Baltic.
omg! I took the Hamburg route over a decade ago and it was very interesting to watch the transfer on the train. But the tunnel sounds more sustainable long-term.
As of a few years ago, the Snälltåget service between Stockholm and Berlin went via the Trelleborg-Sassnitz ferry, so that may still be an option (there’s also an overland route, though it’s somewhat longer). I took this train around 2021 and it went via the ferry, crossing the Baltic in a few hours.
I wish the train fairy would visit the US :(
