Is there a way to diagnose cause of appearing and disappearing SSD in a desktop when SMART is OK? Mainly NVME M2 type.

I might be paranoid, but SMART has failed to give me any useful info on 3 drives I’ve had fail in the past year. Two were platter HHDs that I saw the signs of failure before they went and deliberately ran checks on them. The third was an M2 that just suddenly disappeared one day.

SMART may not be trusted when it is clear but could still be useful in cases showing errors. In my case I would happily replace the SSD if it shows any error.

In monsoon in my area due to moisture build up I have had computer behave strangely before, particularly RAM. Cleaning the contacts helped then.

I am assuming you’ve already run the OEM’s diagnostic tools for your particular SSD?

Sorry, I have not done that yet. Presently I am waiting for it to come back alive. Last 3 boots have been a no show.

        Sorry to hear that!

I recently had my laptop die on me (it was over 10 years old, so no big surprise), but then I had a critical issue with desktop’s PSU just 2 days later.

Not having access to your computers is no fun.

It is also the data that you lost which is sad.

For me, SMART seems to be all OK. Now should try to clean, re-seat and hope for the best.

It’s usually the controller chip that fails in an ssd, not the memory itself. Get your data off and replace / warranty it, there’s nothing to troubleshoot beyond making sure it’s on the latest firmware.
