Does your phone have to be unlocked to show your ID? If do, then you’re basically handing a completely unprotected trove of personal information to someone who probably has no qualms about siphoning out every byte of data as quickly as possible.
Seems like sticking to a little plastic card is a much safer bet.
i’m not a california resident, nor hold a digital ID, but I use apple pay a lot. you do not need to fully unlock the phone to use apple pay, you double click the lock button and pass biometric or pin and it will open the wallet without fully unlocking the phone. also if using the ID involves handing the phone over then this is useless and dangerous, however, when i used apple pay for transit in the eu they would tap it against a reader or another phone to pull the ticket information, i imagine this system would be the similar.
They have a pilot program with the CA DMV app. I added it months ago but haven’t used it because nobody knows how to use it. They just ask for the original ID.
That doesn’t really answer my question. If the device needs to be unlocked then the TSA or any other alleged law enforcement agency can and will just copy your entire phone, simply because they can. I believe the correct response here is “hell no.”

How to present your driver’s license or state ID in person
- Hold the top of your iPhone or the display of your Apple Watch near the identity reader. You don’t need to unlock, show, or hand over your device to present your license or ID.
- On the screen of your device, review the information that will be shared.
- To provide your consent:
- On an iPhone using Face ID: Double-click the side button to authenticate.
- On an iPhone using Touch ID: Hold your finger on the Home button to authenticate.
- On an Apple Watch: Double-click the side button. When you successfully present your license or ID, a checkmark and Done appear on your device.
Perhaps hopefully this won’t become so much of a trend that it will become a de facto requirement.
Asked about support for Android, they said there’s interest, but they need to find a California resident who owns an Android phone, first.
