I do some modding of Shattered for my own use and my current project is adding rares for each enemy type. I’m curious if anyone has comments or suggestions on that topic.

What I’m thinking about so far:

Sewer Viper - poison on hit, guaranteed drop of starflower seed on first kill

Gnoll Poacher - ranged attacks, drops tier 2-3 ranged weapons

Swarm of Blood Flies - atracks drain life, drops seed of sungrass

Elder Crab - moves at normal speed but attacks twice per round and cripples, drops 3 mystery meat

Unstable Skeleton - explodes similar to a bomb or explosive trap when killed, drops a weapon with +1 tier probability

Guard Captain - chain pull also roots, drops armor with +1 tier probability

Malfunctioning DM-100 - immobile, continuously sparks electricity around itself that paralyzes while still also making ranged lightning attacks, drops scroll of retribution

Bloodletter Bat - attacks inflict bleeding, drops potion of purity

Gnoll Warlock - same as dwarf warlock but retreats after applying debuff, drops wand of corruption

Cave Trapper - attacks inflict poison, blind, and cripple, does not retreat after applying debuff, webs to block escape, drops potion of paralyzing gas

Dwarven Ghoulkeeper - ghouls revive with full health instead of 5 when a ghoulkeeper is nearby, and the ghoulkeeper periodically heals and buffs nearby ghouls, drops unstable brew

Senior Warlock - if alone, summons a pair of ghouls, otherwise uses regular warlock attack that also cripples, drops unstable spell

Siege Golem - attacks knock back, throws bombs, drops shrapnel bomb

Enchantress - attacks inflict blind and vulnerability as well as charm, drops exotic scroll of siren’s song

All Seeing Eye - ranged attack pierces walls and barriers, can always see and target the hero within 3 tiles (blind doesn’t help), charging up gives the hero mind vision on the eye, drops potion of mind vision

The snake could have a 50-50 of dropping a sunfruit or a starflower. They are both as powerful and you could argue for both of them being the most powerful one And I think the gnoll is just too similar to the gnoll trickster I think the flies are way too powerful and that their reward is way too underwhelming. I think a full potion of health would be better In the skeleton one, what does it mean “drops a weapon with +1 tier probability”? Every single weapon can drop as +1 or even +2. Same question with the similar expressions The DM 100 seems just unkillable, tbh. And its rewards are underwhelming. Bat’s rewards are underwhelming too. I’d rather fight a normal bat with a chance of a healing pot than a bleeding bat that drops a purity pot. The warlock specifically drops a corruption wand? It’d be better and more balanced if it dropped a random wand. The spider is… Not well planned. The point of the normal one is that it retreats, so it survives longer. This one seems suicidal. You can just kill it. And a potion of paralysis’ just not a good reward either. The ghouls are… op and not op at the same time. If there are a lot around you just die. Else, they aren’t a problem. Again, underwhelming rewards. The warlock seems underwhelming in rewards and attacks, you can just approach it. I think the golem’s cool Enchantress is fitting, and all seeing eye is just op and, again, its drops are very underwhelming

Ok, the gnoll then just feels like any random magic enemy now. That’s good. Ik sungrass seeds are powerful, but: 1st: as I said before, I think snakes having a fifty fifty of dropping either sungrass or starfruit is more balanced, but if they drop both, then it wouldn’t make sense that the flies would only drop a sungrass too. And also, flies regenerating hp seems like a really powerful enemy. They already have too much hp, and if you don’t know that you can go on a corridor to prevent them dividing, they might fuck you up fast. That’s why I think a more powerful reward would be more fitting. I know sungrass is really powerful, but health potions are even more powerful. That’s why I think that for a powerful enemy a powerful reward must await, and sunfruits are great, but healing potions seem better. Ok, yeah, thanks for explaining, I thought it was like the new cursed wand effect where it hits everything in a three by three area. If the paralysis is small (1 turn) it could be balanced enough. I recommend going for the DM 300 turret’s pattern, or if that’s not enough for you, the DM 300 badder bosses turret, which would be also a way to train players without them knowing how to fight DM 300’s badder bosses turret. With that said, I think maybe a scroll of identify would be a better reward, although the scroll of retribution could also be a decent enough reward. Not too upset with that one now that I knot it’s dodgeable at melee distance. Ok, yes, guaranteed potion for six alchemy energy… But still underwhelming. What would you rather, a healing potion or a purity potion? Also, it’s a rare enemy, you only find those, if lucky, once in a run. Gotta understand not only the power but also the rarity of rare enemies, and the potion of purity isn’t just worthy of that rarity. Ik all shaman have a rare chance of dropping a wand, but just corruption? Come on… Same way all thiefs got a chance of dropping a random amulet or ring and the rare thief drops one, this could be the same case (not just a wand of corrosion… For some reason) It’s also fairer this way. The spider just seems like a suicidal spider to me, any normal spider would be harder to kill because of the flee mechanic than this one and I’d be happier to see one of this than a normal spider cuz of that. Regarding its drops, same thing as the bat, 3 meat or phantom piranha would be better drops. Yeah, like regular ghouls but worse, because of the buffs and full health thing… Unstable brew… I think of it same as the bat or the spider. Underwhelming. Check the vanilla rare mobs, they all drop something substantial, something worth fighting them for (except the tormented spirit) like the second best scroll in the game (transmutation) or the third best potion in the game (experience) or a scroll of remove curse (fourth best scroll). Substantial and important stuff, not like, a 10 alchemy energy unstable brew. Normal ghouls drop gold, right? Make this one drop 10 piles of gold, five per ghoul, something useful, powerful and even kinda game changing. Same drop thing with the warlock. An unstable scroll’s just not important enough to justify a rare enemy. Golem’s sharpnel bomb’s alright, there’s already a rare enemy that drops a DM 300 fragment, and the bomb requires one; and the golem seems like a fun idea. The warning thing balances the eye out, I think, and it is way better than ming vision. With its drops… Same thing as bat, spider, ghoul and warlock.
