Should it be? No. But it’s an issue in some places for some people every election, because some poll workers hopped up on Fox News think the gender section in the ID not saying what they think it should say means voter fraud is happening.
As the article goes on to say, trans people vote at a higher rate than cis people, and that’s in spite of potential access issues at the poll.

Ignorant ass Canadian here. I think we have trouble fathoming how ridiculous you make it.
One time on the way back from class (or getting high, I don’t remember) we walked by an advance voting station so we took a couple minutes to vote, during which we realized I didn’t have my wallet on me so a roommate (who had id) vouched for me, the poll worker took down my info and I voted within a couple minutes.
i know its it’s likely just an oversimplification you made, but I feel obligated to point out why this is.
The far-right’s only winning strategy is to restrict voting rights. That’s how much they are not liked, they consciously know and act on the fact that they know they are deeply unpopular.
You also have to gather all the paperwork from various places, which could be easy if your parents are responsible, but onerous if not. In many places, there is no public transportation to those or between those places (or it’s not in a timely manner). After that, they still have to get to the place to get the ID. All of this is time and money that particularly the poor and those in under-served communities cannot muster.
Edit: to add, they also need to get time off of work to accomplish this, which they may not be able to afford. This is why I do not really like voter ID laws as they are often proposed.
And it’s not the same challenge everywhere. You may think, “Just go on Wed when they’re open from 8a to 7p. Nobody works that long!” Well, some people do work that long because they go from one job to another and in some counties the ID issuing office is open only a few hours per month!
I spent quite a bit of time working multiple jobs to survive with basically no time to do anything other than sleep. I can definitely relate to this.

My dude I’m not American and very much on the left of the political spectrum (more left than you can vote in the US). I just think you are a large part of the problem with voter suppression. Instead of helping people, you’re scaring them into passivity.
I’m in a US state that is known for actively suppressing black populations from voting in all sorts of ways, including the bogus voter ID laws. I’ll say it again, there was never a problem of voter fraud before voter ID laws, so they are a made up solution for a non-issue, designed to discourage minorities. You replied to me elsewhere “Just get an ID.” If things were that simple, then this tactic wouldn’t work and there wouldn’t be laws in place to try and control voting.
The voter suppression is coming from the same ones who are selling the fix.

Some places have made or are trying to make that not valid. No, it doesn’t make sense until you realize that disrupting voting is all they have.
As for Voter ID laws…if it’s true that you can show up with an ID that doesn’t match yourself and vote…almost seems like the Voter ID law isn’t necessary, and is an extra step thrown up to discourage people of certain demographics from voting. I say almost seems in jest, as that’s exactly why they (meaning Republicans in control of those areas) passed those laws. There never was voter fraud of any significance.

14 states require an excuse, like disability or being out of the country, to vote by mail.
There’s also dozens of ways to fuck up the process and by the time someone sees a mistake it’s almost definitely too late to fix it and still have the vote count.
