Hello! I’m open to messages and questions about my current role/education!

I’m currently a 3rd year DO student based out of the Twin Cities in Minnesota. I have a background as an EMT/ER Tech before starting med school. I’m a very non-traditional student, and it took me 4 application cycles to get into medical school because of some undergrad stuff that my post-bacc didn’t quite make up for. (So I’m super happy to advise where I can about med school applications!)

I’m hoping to go into EM or Family Med (but mostly EM), and I would have gone for a PA master’s with a Master’s of Social Work if I hadn’t gotten into medical school, so I know what I’m signing up for with those specialties. :)

First time noticing this community, subscribed!

I’m a 2 year post residency EM doc in the Eastern Midwest region. I actually grew up on the west side of Minneapolis! I miss that city, but doubt I’ll be moving back there any time soon.

Mind if I ask where you did residency? I’m aiming for Regions and Hennepin, and I guess Mayo if those two won’t take me. (It’s weird to think of Mayo as a backup option)

Not wanting to give away too much personal information on the Internet, thanks to my residency wanting “the brand” and social media clout, we were required to have an online presence and bio. But I went to residency in the same location I’m currently practicing, Eastern Midwest.

I originally applied to regions and Hennepin, would have loved to go there. Due to other external factors, it was better to come here.

I don’t think Regions or Hennepin have a “brand” besides being the county hospital and safety net, so I hope I don’t run into that issue. All good though, don’t let on more than you’re comfortable with.

Welcome, I’d love to see more communities and content related to medicine on the fediverse :)

If it helps, part of my hope with [email protected] was that it would be used by medical professionals, similar to r/Medicine on Reddit (whom we’ve been in contact with, and from what I can tell we have a friendly relationship with). I just haven’t had the time (or expertise) to pursue it further. Any content that could be posted in this new community would also be great on that one, and I’m happy to add more people as moderators or make changes to that community to have it better suit what people want. That way, it gets the boost of already having a good number of subscribers that are interested in that content.

No reason why there can’t be more than one community! My reason for suggesting it is because there aren’t that many medical professionals here on Lemmy yet, so it could help to coordinate a bit so we’re not spread too thin. For example, encouraging posts in (or cross-posts to) the larger community at [email protected] and the such.

I love that you’ve already found some more medical professionals with this community :)

I wanted to create an atmosphere closer to the “water cooler hangout” type thing where we can interact with each other as fellow humans that all happen to be medical professionals with shared experiences and perspectives. The Medicine community seems more like a place for sharing articles/studies and the like than what I’m aiming for with a bigger emphasis on camaraderie and support.

        Makes sense :)

That’s what I wanted to see in [email protected], but not being in the field currently myself it was hard to get discussions going, so I stuck to sharing articles I came across. Feel free to use the community as you’d like, I’d be happy just having a space for camaraderie / support / career discussions regardless of which community it happens on. Thanks for getting this going!

Hey I have a MD with residency in Neurology. Then I did a PhD in Neuroimmunology with board certification.

I’m currently doing a hectic mix of teaching two med courses, working on Long COVID research (biomarkers), and working in an understaffed long COVID (now post-viral disease) clinic.

    Nice to meet you.

I mostly lurk on lemmy, but that’s because I haven’t found a place I’d like to consistently contribute yet. Maybe here?

I’m hoping we can get folks interacting! I didn’t see any communities fitting this niche, so I decided to try filling in the gap. Happy to have you here!

        Cool yeah!

I’m really passionate about my field. And a lot of medical professionals have prejudice or believe outdates stereotypes about it. So I’d love to make some posts about it if that’s okay?

What kind of stuff would you encourage posting?

Interesting studies, relevant resources? Or would you prefer discussion type posts?

            Or all of the above?

All of the above. I want this community to be sort of a catch-all for any and all stuff relevant to medical professionals that folks want to post.
