Hi folks, are you hoping anyone picks up the torch and makes a community on here? How about a wishlist? Hopefully this will give a poke to others with mutual interest and to support some collaboration!
Running these things is not hard, a fun hobby and due to the nature of the Fediverse, rather laid back. Do not be afraid to try and take control of your content. This is what this place is about. You have agency here. If you have and idea and would like help with starting a community, raise your hand here!
I’ll start:
- Wild Green Memes for Ecological Fiends
- Palaeontology
- Climate
- Meteorology
- Volcanism
- Entomology
- Oceans
- PlantClinic
- Hydrology
- History of Science
- Open Science
- Digital Humanities
- Ferns
- Orchids
I wouldn’t mind seeing some of these:
- Succulents
- Ornithology
- Nootropics
- Ask Science
- Nature Appreciation (general/casual, amateur photos, hiking, etc)
I also very much miss r/goblincore, but I feel like that miiight be a stretch for this server
There’s a cottagecore community on another server, but the goblin one was gold too. :)
People talking about goblincore and I have no idea what’s it about. Time to google
Friend goblin, it is good to see you!
I will add a hyper-specific community suggestion; Fantastic Sticks.

Someone made it! Thank you so much. It was one of my favourite places online.
And Kerfuffle wrote the perfect sidebar. An excerpt for the curious:
“In this cozy corner of the internet, goblincore enthusiasts come together to celebrate the beauty found in the everyday oddities and treasures of nature and the natural world. Inspired by folklore, fantasy, and a touch of mischief, Goblincore Lemmy embodies a love for all things wild, untamed, and delightfully peculiar.”
“Within this community, you’ll find a diverse group of individuals who share a deep appreciation for the charm of gnarled tree roots, moss-covered rocks, peculiar mushrooms, and the hidden wonders of the forest floor. They revel in embracing a simpler, earth-centered existence, finding joy in foraging, gardening, and crafting with repurposed materials.”
Not so much science, but a massive overlap for those who are also here for the love of nature.
You’re welcome! I was looking myself and thought I’d help others
I was on goblincore too! I’m too high strung to take care of a community but I’d joing it if it exists.

- Astrophotography
- Printed circuit boards
- Electronics
- Optics
- Atmospheric science
- Air quality
- Meteorology
- Sensors (also noted by Salamander)
- arduino
- 3dprinting
- minerals
- fluorescent minerals
I’ll add more as I think of more
There are a lot of electronics and 3D printing communities already up!
Yep, I saw that. There are none that do design review as far as I have seen. I suppose that’s more engineering and out of scope here?
Ask @sal :)
- Paleontology (though we have palaeoecology already?)
- psychedelic research (but don’t we already have generic psychedelic?)
- entomology/bug ID, and bird ID, any animal ID
- do we have neuroscience already?
I also used to frequent r/thalassophobia and r/natureismetal, not sure if those would fit the bill here.
I am not typically someone who contributes with posts though, but I’m happy to moderate if you guys need a hand.
My concern is with starting a lot of communities and have no material to contribute consistently. I find it rather discouraging to join when I find a subreddit that looks interesting but abandoned
RSS feeds! :) Honestly, sometimes these spaces just need a spark. Don’t be afraid to lay the tracks. People might come. :) You are on a tabula rasa platform, and people here can make their own and delete their communities as they want. It is more ephemeral than reddit.
psychedelic research (but don’t we already have generic psychedelic?)
I am aware of [email protected] and [email protected] , but they are not so active and not necessarily focused on research. So I wouldn’t mind someone taking care of a community here. It is a very active and interesting field, especially as it relates to mental health.
do we have neuroscience already?
No, and I’m surprised I didn’t make one when I made the instance.
I also used to frequent r/thalassophobia and r/natureismetal, not sure if those would fit the bill here.
I think Natureismetal would fit because it is always about an aspect of nature. Thassophobia is more on the edge, I would not oppose that but if users complain about it being too off-topic I would respond to that.

Always welcome! }

It is always possible to deal with a problem like this (of lots of empty communities) in the future, so no need to be too concerned!
Hey, want to mod [email protected] ? No pressure; I just had too many articles in my RSS feed and as a strict paleoecology person it felt off having them in there.
Sure! Let me know what I need to do :)
- Photochemistry
- Ethnobotany
- Macro Photography
- Electrodynamics
- Psychedelic research
- Mollusks
Nudibranchs(Oh, that one exists but should be more popular!)- Genetics
- Pigments
- Symbiosis
- Sensors …
I can go on forever :-P
Second for the sensors! In a related vain, I have been looking for a community to cover printed circuit boards, electronics, ask electronics. The pcb subreddit was a great resource where people would provide design reviews.
I can find the following communities related to electronics:
https://mander.xyz/c/[email protected]
https://mander.xyz/c/[email protected]
https://mander.xyz/c/[email protected]
There is a community browser here: https://mander.xyz/c/[email protected]
I don’t find one analogous to the PCB subreddit. I could create one, but unfortunately I don’t have the ability to create the community members, so I prefer to wait for users to create the community themselves. If you would like to create the community similar to the PCB subreddit (or some other electronics-related community), that would be awesome!
I’m hanging out for some marine science/biology and GIS related…
- There are 8500 different programming communities, but maybe something TRULY Computer Science oriented (more mathy side, rather than dev / engineer oriented), possibly including Artificial Intelligence, but I’m thinking like papers, not
r/singularity
rip offs. - Also maybe something about FOSS Science (like to discuss packages such as AstroPy, ROpenScience etc).
- I was also thinking like a tech sustainability form (combining tech + plants. robotic vertical farming, “Open Source Ecology”), not sure if that necessarily fits with the spirit of mander or not :)
I would love this as well. I want to add also some more foundational/philosophical oriented topics like foundational physics and mathematics, and philosophy of science (or natural philosophy as Sean Carroll likes to call it).
Lol. Jk. But am I…? You wouldn’t believe it, but I am literally listening to a Sean Caroll talk as I type this :)
Nice! I would say I am as well but I paused it maybe 30 min ago to ponder something that was said.

Communities about self strangulation
Lol! I do not quite think that’s on topic for us here. ;) There are servers for that.
Self strangulation with vines?
kudzu
Alright, Poison Ivy.
Adding to the list:
- Foraging
- Psychology
- Something History related if not History general. Maybe environmental history or something.
- Documentaries
- Solar Punk Makers, for Maker projects with an eco twist.
