Is the matrix user option just to allow for direct messages akin to what Reddit has, but keeping them on a seperate platform to avoid the devs having to replicate federated DMing tech that already exists in another project?
Also, how many of you are using it? What matrix home servers do you recommend?

Matrix servers are a bit like Discord servers. You can even use bridges to link Matrix channels to other social apps (like Discord). I probably use about half the amount I use on Discord but largely avoid using Matrix due to bridges occasionally going down
It’s like adding links to your twitter from insta, or discord, or twitch. It just tells people where to find you on different platforms.
I created a space for people to make connections and learn from each other but I haven’t had much success in growing it yet it’s only been about a week.
I called it Grok.Town and plan to start up a Lemmy instance at that domain, but for now it’s a space on Matrix with a few rooms to chat and get to know others and help each other.
